Photography should serve as a reminder of an event, something peruses or a beautiful location, yet somehow they don't always capture our memories accurately. Here are five typical errors we all tend to make, along with some straightforward tips on how to prevent your work.
1. Light
One of the most important elements of photography is light. The direction, quality, and quantity of light all play an important role in how images are going to turn out.
Harsh midday lighting is often avoided by many photographers for good reason. Bright sunlight tends to wash out colours and creates dark shadows that are often unflattering, especially when taking portraits.
Make the most of overcast days. The cloud cover acts like a giant softbox and will soften harsh light. Most importantly, take advantage of the “golden hour” when the sun is low in the sky and casts a wonderful warm light over the landscape. Also pay attention to the direction of the light and how the shadows create a sense of depth in your images.
2. Understanding your equipment:
Everything seems difficult when you first start. It's only when you make mistakes and learn from them that you will improve! Practice really does make perfect….. Take time to practice with al the setting your camera has and take lots of image …LOTS
3. Cluttered compositions:
Including too many unnecessary elements in a single frame will make your image look messy, step back and consider visual impact of your work. Find a strong point of interest such a shape, colour or face and make sure it stand out from the rest of the scene.
4. Over processing your images
Many photographers fall into the trap of over developing an image, if you process your own work it your fault and not the equipment your using. If you outsource your work and pay someone to process it, talk to them and ask for help if your not happy with it. It is often better to err on the side of subtle adjustments and allow the image to tell a simple story rather than shout from the page or screen.
5. Forgetting to enjoy your photography
Don't get stressed over missing that one image, the is always another day and sometimes just relaxing will provide better work.
